I Lost My Credit Card – A Short Story for English Learners (B1 Level)

In this B1-level short story, Maria lost her credit card. And now she feels scared and worried while trying to find it

Maria’s Panic at the Coffee Shop
It was a normal Tuesday afternoon. Maria was at her favorite coffee shop, waiting for her iced latte. She reached into her bag to take out her wallet. Her heart skipped a beat. Her credit card was missing!
Panic set in immediately. She searched her bag again, faster this time. Nothing. Maria’s face turned pale. Her mind started racing with worry. What if someone was using her card right now? What if her account was empty?
Running to Find the Credit Card
Maria stood up quickly, her chair falling behind her with a loud crash. She didn’t care about the stares from other customers. “I lost my credit card,” she muttered to herself, her voice trembling.
She ran out of the coffee shop, her thoughts a blur. Where could it be? She remembered the last place she used it—the supermarket. Maria hurried down the street, her footsteps heavy with anxiety. She pushed the door open and rushed to the cashier.
“Excuse me, did anyone find a credit card?” she asked, her voice shaking.
The cashier looked at her for a moment and then nodded. “Wait here,” she said. Maria’s heart pounded in her chest as she watched the cashier walk to the back of the store. She couldn’t stop thinking about the worst-case scenarios—someone emptying her account, her credit ruined.
Relief and a Lesson Learned
Finally, the cashier returned. She had Maria’s card. Maria let out a deep breath, relief washing over her. “Thank you,” she said quietly, her eyes wet with emotion.
The cashier handed her the card and said, “You left it here yesterday.” Maria’s face flushed with embarrassment. She remembered now—she was distracted and forgot to take it back after paying.
Maria took her card and walked out of the supermarket, her legs feeling weak. “I need to be more careful,” she whispered to herself, her emotions a mix of exhaustion and relief. As she walked back to the coffee shop, she knew she had been lucky this time. It was a lesson she wouldn’t forget.
